Our world is filled with many Awesome interactions but not many OHRsom interactions. As the name says it we are all about illumination and light.
Our belief system is simple – “Learn it, Live it and Love it.”
With a multifaceted approach we aim to inspire students through international trips to Israel, America and South Africa and enrich their minds with weekly interactive social and learning programs and to build a sense of community and belonging through a Student Centre. Armed with a real internal connection to Judaism students can – as clichéd as it might sound – go out and share that OHR with the world that surrounds them. Ohrsom Australia.
At the core of our organisation is a belief system that young aspiring Jewish Uni Students are interested in learning about life through the Prism of Torah knowledge. Students want to be challenged, they want to fill their minds with meaningful ideas that help them navigate the challenges of a modern world. Our trips all come with a commitment to being a part of our learning centre. Once a week coming to a spiritual revolution where we learn and grow together over a delicious dinner and lectures that incorporate all facets of Torah knowledge from Ethics of our Fathers and other fantastic insights, Learn it, Live it and Love it.
Ohrsom was an incredibly enriching program filled with both deeply meaningful, fun and adventurous times. Run by absolutely incredible leaders, I could not have pictured a better way to spend the mid-semester break than experiencing Israel in the manner which I did with Ohrsom. I would highly recommend this trip to any young Jews looking to travel throughout their mid-semester break in order to simultaneously experience and grow from Ohrsom’s incredibly unique program alongside like-minded students of similar age.Jesse Fleizig
Signing up to the Orshom program was something I was quite hesitant to do at first, due to the fact I’d been to Israel 4 times before, and that there are compulsory weekly sessions we’d need to attend. However, overall I am seriously glad I chose to join this program. Rabbi Channen and Rabbi Evan are fun, enthusiastic, relaxed people who bring such a good vibe to the organization making everyone feel so welcome. The trip itself in Israel was a wonderful experience, involving a good mixture of partying and learning alongside my Melbourne and Sydney friends. I especially enjoyed the freedom that was granted to us each day, ensuring we weren’t too tied to a program! Much of the discussion within the weekly learning programs provide a unique and intellectually stimulating outlook into many moral dilemmas that face society and Jewish people today; this is something I’ve thoroughly looked forward to each week. Ohrsom has been a major highlight of my year, and I can’t wait to continue the sessions in 2019.Jamie Muscatel
The OHRSOM trip was so significant for me as it catered for everyone. Those with different levels of Jewish beliefs were able to experience and explore different aspects of Judaism and Israel with an incredible group of people. The program was also extremely well-balanced, with activities that brought the group together, as well as more deep and meaningful activities too. The learning sessions after the trip have also been a great way to catch up with everyone and continue the overall vibe of the program.Jeremy Kaplan
The Ohrsom experience was indeed truly awesome. The reason why I chose to participate in Ohrsom was quite unique compared to the rest of the group, as I was only one of three to have never visited Israel before! After speaking to a few friends, I knew this program was the right choice for me. Immediately on the first day of the program I was already meeting a bunch of new Sydney people, making new friends, and even reconnecting with old friends; it was an amazing experience. Rav Chanan and Rav Evan were outstanding leaders, making everyone feel so comfortable and included. The program had the perfect mix between crazy parties, insane activities that even an adrenaline junkie like myself could feel the excitement from, and meaningful learning. Truthfully, I was initially hesitant about the learning aspect as I attended high school at a non-Jewish school and previously it had never appealed to me. However, the learning was super interesting and ultimately was my favourite part! It was incredible to learn values and a way of life that I will carry with me forever. Likewise, the shiurim following the program have been an amazing eye opener, teaching me many lessons that has impacted my life in such a positive way!Jayden Beville
Ohrsom is a program that goes above and beyond for its participants to gain meaningful insights and unforgettable experiences both in Israel and once back home. It establishes a platform for young Jewish Australians to get together and create a distinct community to which they belong, significant since especially after school there are limited opportunities to connect to Judaism in a stimulating and social setting. Having gone on a number of Israel trips prior to Ohrsom, I feared the trip would be repetitive and simply offer me more of the same. To my surprise and elation, every day on Ohrsom brought with it completely unique and novel experiences. The program synthesised meaning and incredible fun, offering a trip that has an impact far beyond two weeks…What I love most about Ohrsom is that the program extends beyond the Israel trip and has become a valued part of my life in Sydney by offering activities and initiatives for me to regularly be a part of.Tali Paikin
For me ohrsom was an incredible, one off social experience which was further enriched by some challenging, and fascinating speakers. Being in a brand new social environment with people from the other side of the world, mixed with awesome and fun activities is the perfect recipe for an incredible social journey which was perfect for the uni break. Also, the days spent in the ohrsomaech yeshiva definitely impressed with the high calibre speakers who were engaging and thought provoking.Ben De Winter
Ohrsom Student as an organisation, from the ground up, is unbelievable. Their commitment to educating and inspiring Jewish youth is simply astounding, and the means by which they achieve their goal of strengthening Jewish continuity is always exciting, appealing, creative and fun. As a past participant on the most recent Ohrsom Student Israel trip (2016), I can attest to its unmatched schedule which amazingly combines Israel’s best activities on offer, enormous amounts of fun and opportunity for socialising, spiritual experiences, comfortable accommodation and food and captivating speakers for a very affordable price! Upholding the incredibly high standards of Ohrsom’s overseas trips, each week Ohrsom Melbourne manages to offer an enjoyable, insightful and thought provoking night of Jewish learning, discussion and of course, eating. Ohrsom is, in no uncertain terms, exceptional at offering young Jews opportunities to explore their Jewish heritage and identity, and I could not be more pleased to be a part of it.Gadi Hershkowitz
I am really happy that I’m involved in the ‘OHRSOM Student’ program. The weekly discussions are always engaging and thought-provoking and have provided me the opportunity to engage with Jewish learning in a way that is both intellectual and visceral. The Israel Tour in July was an unforgettable part of the program; it was great to share such a meaningful and fun experience with the South-African students. Anonymous
Ohrsom is a once in a lifetime program that allows Jewish youth from around the world to stay connected to their Jewish Learning and love for Israel. While in Israel, we were privileged enough to be able to attend the best yeshivot and midrashot and learnt a myriad of valuable lessons that we can apply in our everyday lives. Not only was the trip to Israel an exciting and fun way to explore our holy land, but we are still able to engage with our Jewish roots through relevant and thought-provoking shiurs in Australia. These shiurs continue to fuel our hunger for knowledge of judaica and our culture. Ohrsom has allowed me to maintain my connection to Judaism and has simultaneously afforded me the opportunity to form lifelong friendships and connections.Demi Goldberg
